John DeSpain

John DeSpain’s artistic journey began in the rugged landscapes of Montana, where he developed a lifelong passion for wildlife and narrative art. After earning a film degree from Montana State University, he spent decades in Los Angeles as a commercial artist, contributing to iconic projects in animation—including work on classic General Mills monster cereal characters—as well as technical illustration and graphics management. After leaving the rapid-paced life of Los Angeles, John moved to a small cabin in the Mojave Desert and after three years relocated to Placitas, N.M., where the region’s dramatic beauty inspired him to return to fine art full-time.

Now focusing primarily on pastels, John’s work captures the intense light and shadow of landscapes throughout New Mexico and the West. “The desert is a place of extreme opposites – hot and cold; parched and flooded; windy and still; harsh and delicate. I’m drawn to explore this duality, this yin and yang of light and shadow, of expansive vistas and hidden details, of ruggedness and fragility in this place that I love,” he says.

John is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico and served as its former vice-president. His work has been featured in prestigious juried exhibitions such as Masterworks of New Mexico and the International Pastel Painting Exhibition at the Millicent Rogers Museum. Recently recognized with top honors in national competitions, his paintings are held in private collections across the U.S. and Canada.
