Collection: DeSpain, John
John DeSpain’s artistic journey began in the rugged landscapes of Montana, where he developed a lifelong passion for wildlife and narrative art. After earning a film degree from Montana State University, he spent decades in Los Angeles as a commercial artist, contributing to iconic projects in animation—including work on classic General Mills monster cereal characters—as well as technical illustration and graphics management. Following a restorative period in the Mojave Desert, John relocated to Placitas, New Mexico, where the region’s dramatic beauty inspired him to return to fine art full-time.
Now focusing primarily on pastels, John is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico and served as its former vice-president. His work, which captures the intense light and shadow of Western landscapes, has been featured in prestigious juried exhibitions such as Masterworks of New Mexico and the International Pastel Painting Exhibition at the Millicent Rogers Museum. Recently recognized with top honors in national competitions, his paintings are held in private collections across the U.S. and Canada, reflecting his continued dedication to capturing the spirit of the Southwest.
