Our History
Weems is a women-owned, Latina-owned business dedicated to promoting contemporary artistic excellence within an approachable atmosphere for every kind of collector.
Established in 1981 by Mary Ann Weems, Weems Gallery began with a mission to demystify the art world and make regional works accessible to a broader audience. For nearly four decades, the gallery became a cultural anchor in Albuquerque, famously hosting the annual Weems International Artfest. This juried event ran for 32 years, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each November to view works from hundreds of artists while raising significant funds for local children’s charities and healthcare initiatives. The gallery's reputation was built on this blend of community service and a diverse inventory that ranged from affordable pottery to high-end fine art, consistently earning it "Best of the City" accolades.
In late 2019, Mary Ann Weems retired to return to her own painting career, selling the institution. Despite the immediate challenges of the global pandemic shortly after the transition, the gallery remained a steadfast supporter of New Mexico’s creative community, and relocated to 5935 Wyoming Boulevard. In October 2025, Sarah Greenwalt, born and raised in Albuquerque, acquired the business. Today, the gallery represents more than 50 artists from the West, fine jewelry artists, and offers additional services to support collectors and arts organizations.
