Wooded groves are a recurring theme in Nowlin's work, such that you can almost hear the crunch of the leaves underneath the hooves of the travelers as the move.  To encourage a the natural form of a tree, Nowlin often paints the background and allows the shape of the trunk to emerge from the negative space.
