My muse is light. Not just any light. My perfect light is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and the warm enveloping light in Northern New Mexico, in particular, the Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch area. It’s not to say I won’t paint with other kinds of light, but everything I do will have an emphasis on the quality of the light. I also favor odd compositions. While most people are comfortable with established compositional styles, like the rule of thirds, I try to separate myself from this when the painting allows it. Another compositional quirk is that I don’t like the eye to settle somewhere in the painting. I try to create visual pathways to move the eye through the painting. It makes the art seem deeper and more active. Finally, I like to take risks even though the failure rate is higher. Oil 18x20 Frame: 23x25
