Collection: Young, Kara

An internationally recognized fiber and mixed media artist, Kara Young draws inspiration from the passage of time on ancient ruins, petroglyphs, and the weathered walls of cities like San Miguel de Allende. Her 35-year career has evolved from sculptural weaving and art clothing to her current mastery of handmade papermaking. Based in the United States and exhibited across Europe and Japan, Young’s work strikes a balance between the ancient and the contemporary, capturing a "witnessed" history that fits seamlessly into diverse modern environments.

Young’s wall pieces are constructed from thickly cast abaca handmade paper, integrated with found objects and layered materials. To achieve an aged aesthetic, she employs crackled joint compound further enhanced by copper or gold leaf, weathered cedar shingles, and encaustic painting with beeswax and pigment. These lightweight, durable compositions are typically displayed without frames, allowing the textured, multi-dimensional surfaces to speak to the endurance of the natural world.  “ My hope is that my work will serve as a touchstone for those who view it, sothat they too may keep their deep spirits and passions alive. „
