During the 1930s and 40s, Louis Ribak was a prominent Social Realist who exhibited alongside figures like Raphael Soyer and Reginald Marsh. His early career was defined by mural work for the Works Progress Administration—most notably the 1939 piece View near Albemarle in North Carolina—and his 1933 collaboration with Diego Rivera on the ill-fated Man at the Crossroads for Rockefeller Center.
Ribak’s life and art shifted significantly after marrying fellow artist Beatrice Mandelman in 1942. Following a medical discharge from the Army due to asthma, the couple moved to Taos, New Mexico, in 1944 in search of a better climate. This move prompted a stylistic evolution for Ribak, as he traded his realist roots for a brighter, more abstract aesthetic. Together, the couple founded the Taos Valley Art School in 1947, where Ribak served as director and instructor until 1955.
Ribak remained in Taos until his death in 1979. Today, his work is held in prestigious institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Newark Museum of Art. To ensure their artistic legacy, the Mandelman-Ribak Foundation cataloged decades of their work before donating the entire collection and their personal archives to the University of New Mexico in 2014.
