Collection: Nelson, Rachel

A graduate of Principia College with a BFA, Rachel began her award-winning watercolor career in Ohio before moving to New Mexico in 1974, drawn by the state's legendary sunsets. Under the mentorship of Jack Dietrich, she refined her approach to the high-desert landscape by adopting a simplified palette and focusing on the unique geometry of Southwestern landforms. A foundational member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society and a long-time artist with Weems Gallery, Rachel has balanced her professional success with years of dedicated service as an elementary school art volunteer.

Rachel’s current style emphasizes fun and spontaneity through a unique technique using transparent watercolors on gessoed surfaces. Because the slick surface prevents the paint from absorbing immediately, colors flow together to create a vibrant, fluid aesthetic that prioritizes strong design and movement. Her goal is to produce "flowing" compositions that remain visually engaging from every angle, capturing the light and energy of the Southwest with a "keep it simple" philosophy.
