Collection: Bothne, Janet
Abstract painter Janet Bothne has been "weaving" color into vibrant, non-objective works for over two decades. A former realist, Bothne shifted her focus to the paint itself as the subject matter, developing a practice that balances intuition with organization and chaos with Zen-like precision. Her creative journey began in Massachusetts and evolved through diverse roles—from antique restoration to graphic design—before she fully recommitted to her fine art practice in California in 1996.
Since then, Bothne’s work has been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Santa Monica Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). In 2013, she relocated to New Mexico, where she founded Studio J Contemporary in Los Ranchos and spent years sharing her theories with students. Today, she focuses exclusively on her own studio practice, experimenting with new materials and fresh chapters of imagination to create works that are found in important corporate and private collections worldwide.
