Dennis Chamberlain | A Delicate Existence

In photographic art, a "suspension of plausibility" describes a subtle blend of reality and fantasy. It refers to artwork designed to look realistic without being purely representational. This state of mind is essential for exploring the evocative series by artist Dennis Chamberlain titled A Delicate Existence.
Chamberlain, working from Corrales, NM, is well-known for his saturated, detailed portraits of natural beauty in the West. This exhibition shows a different side of Chamberlain wherein he takes his photographic composites to a next level. A Delicate Existence is a collection of black-and-white digital collages printed and mounted on aluminum, that portray a stark and desolate landscape. The lone sign of life, a tree, sprouts from within the scene. Whether it is sprouting or fighting for survival remains a mystery. Each layer of each piece is a photograph by Chamberlain, including the individual leaves on the tree - composed from his catalog of over 225,000 images (and growing).
The series began four years ago in Santa Fe, inspired by a complex wisteria vine. Dennis envisioned the delicate vine standing unsupported, bearing leaves taken from a sacred fig tree he had photographed years earlier in a deserted New Mexico cemetery. He pictured a tree that was determined yet delicate, clinging to life while anchoring its roots in desert rock and sand. Embracing this surreal scene invites viewers into that very suspension of plausibility.
As the series progressed, Dennis realized that the resilient tree was a reflection of himself. Approaching his eightieth year, he has become increasingly conscious of the fragility of life. Yet fragile or not, Dennis feels the tree is fortunate to observe the breathtaking beauty of the desert Southwest. He often reflects on whether the tree or he truly belongs in these ancient landscapes. Ultimately, as long as Dennis can continue to admire and cherish the breathtaking scenes of the Southwest, he intends to savor every remaining moment.

The Creative Process
Chamberlain is deeply captivated by the rich textures, dramatic shapes, intricate patterns, and expansive skies of the desert Southwest. Standing among the rocks and gazing across vast canyons and plateaus gives him a profound connection to the earth. To fulfill his creative drive and expressionistic vision, he disassembles and reassembles his photographs. Through this meticulous process, he crafts a personal reality that feels abstract, meaningful, and deeply connected to the spirit of the region.
As a photographic compositor, Dennis creates final images by blending elements from numerous photographs. Each composite in this series combines scenes captured across New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Southern California, with select elements captured using infrared photography.
With A Delicate Existence, isolating the delicate wisteria vines and fine fig leaves proved to be one of the most painstaking tasks of his twenty five year artistic career. What emerged from this intricate work is a true labor of love, offering viewers a striking glimpse into a serene and imaginative world.
Selections from this series will be on view October 30 - November 21, 2026 at Weems Gallery in Albuquerque, NM, and available online.
