âMother & Child at Laguna Puebloâ is a metal collage. The image is inspired by a photograph that surfaced in my search for women in history from Laguna Pueblo. The photograph is said to be about 5 years old, but there were no credits to the photographer or details available.
To me, the image honors women, and their dedication to their children. It also depicts the craftsmanship in pottery and weaving which Kawaik people from Laguna are renown for.
According to âThe Legends of America, these are traditions that are said to go back to 1300AD, but more recent archeological work is supporting the idea that these people existed as far back as 3000 AD. The people are carrying on the traditions now and in the future.
The figures are cut from copper. The hair is pierced to create texture and detail. Oxidation is used for shading throughout. The motherâs dress is constructed from an unusual piece of copper screen. Using this, I was able to suggest the checkered plaid of the fabric. The metal has been cut, bent, folded, molded and textured to give it a 3-D effect. The woven blanket is cut from nickel and depicts the striped pattern typical in their weaving style. It is draped over the motherâs head and around her shoulders. The rest of the blanket has fallen to the floor and is still partially rolled up at their feet. The large piece of pottery is a typical representation of their pottery style. It is pierced from nickel and features motifs that they are famous for in their work.
The brass background has been treated with a bath of vinegar and salt which leaves this fabulous patina rich in golds, rusts, and green colors.
Each segment is secured to the background with rivets.
