Monique Belitz Works

Monique Belitz
I was born on a houseboat in Utrecht in the Netherlands, where I lived until my family
moved to the area East of Munich, Germany, when I was seven. There I went to school
and later attended the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich, where I received my
BA in art education and English as a second language. I married and moved first to
Maryland, then to Oregon, where we lived for eighteen years in the McKenzie Valley. I
taught art classes in painting and print making at the Maude Kerns Center in Eugene,
OR, later design, color design, drawing and water color painting at Lane Community
College as adjunct faculty. When the marriage was over, I decided to move to New
Mexico to go back to school. We had visited the Taos Pueblo once during a crosscountry trip and the experience stayed with me for over twenty years. At the University
of New Mexico in Albuquerque I first received my Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and
Drawing with honors, then my Masters in Art History with emphasis in Native American
Art, again with honors. The dual degree allowed me to teach art as well as art history at
Doane University in Crete, Nebraska, as an Assistant Professor. During my tenure, I also
undertook many local, state and international community projects. However, for a
landscape painter the surroundings on the Plains proved depressing, so in 2018 I took
early retirement to move back to New Mexico where I settled in Lama, north of Taos,
rejoicing in the beauty around me. Since then, I spent my time being a full-time artist
and gardener. I participate in annual group shows such as the Miniature Show at the
Millicent Rogers Museum and the Fall Art Exhibition in Taos, as well as the yearly
ArtsThrive exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum, in addition to other national group
shows. I am currently represented by two galleries in Taos, the Magpie Gallery and the
Wilder-Nightingale Gallery, the Artisans on Main Gallery in La Veta in Colorado and
now, by the Weems Gallery in Albuquerque. As I started participating in group shows in
Germany while being an undergraduate, I have by now joined over one hundred
national and international group shows and had over fifty solo shows in the US and
Germany.
